Afghanistan Woman Beaten to Death For Burning the Quran

Rabat – A mentally impaired woman was allegedly killed in Kabul on Tuesday by group of angry men over accusations of burning a copy of the Qur’an.An angry mob armed with sticks, bricks, and stones beat the woman to death near the Shah-e Doh Shamshira shrine in central Kabul, local police told the Afghanistan’s Tolo news agency.The 27 year-old victim’s body, whose father said has suffered from a mental illness for 16 years, was then set on fire and thrown into a muddy river after she died, according to witnesses. The victim was lynched by the mob over accusations that she burned a copy of Islam’s holy book, the Qur’an. Her father told the police that her behavior was not intentional, since she was “suffering from mental illness.”The incident caused worldwide outrage. Footage of the attack has gone viral on social media. In the video, hundreds of Afghan men appear to beat the victim using sticks and bricks. Once the victim died, her body was carried to the banks of a river, set on fire, and thrown into the water.The Daily Telegraph quoted the Twitter account of a spokesman for the Afghanistan Ministry of the Interior, confirming that four suspects had been arrested in connection to the attack. read more
