He is keen to learn from every fall.Excerpts from chat with the young man who finished IPL’ 2019’s Emerging player of the year.Q. Quality runs in IPL 2019. Big confidence booster..A. This IPL was a confidence booster. But I would not say that I am satisfied because there were a lot of other opportunities where I should have done better. And as a team we had a chance to win the last game to qualify for playoffs. But the positive is that I got runs at the top of the order and while chasing as well. So learned a lot.Q. You started batting in the middle order for KKR before finding your groove at the top..A. When you are batting down the order, the mind set is completely different. When you are batting at the top you can pace the innings. While batting down, you either have to bat at the same pace that is set or raise the pace. So you can bat your own way and that’s an advantage when you are batting at the top. That’s what I tried to capitalise on and it worked in some innings.Q. It must have been a learning, to learn to play to your strengths.advertisementA. Yes. In a few games it also happened that I was trying to do something extra outside my natural game. So had to realise that it’s not my game. That’s what one wants not to do but in the middle there is so much emotion that you can’t keep control. One tries to hit out and drifts away from one’s natural game. But to keep nerves under control at that stage is the most important.Q. Gets tough to stick to your game when Andre Russel is smacking it at the other end?A. This season, I batted quite a bit with Andre Russel and with him together in fact there is much lesser pressure on you as a batsman. So when everyone is focused on how to bowl to him, you end up getting loose balls as well.Q. One learning that you will take from the great Jacques Kallis…A. When the tournament began, Jacques Kallis told me to trust my strengths and keep doing what I have been doing for all these years. He had told me, ‘you have many cricketing shots that you don’t need to do anything extra.’ And it sounds very simple but to be able to keep doing that is the key.Q. You won the India cap this year. How did that feel?A. Wearing the India cap this year, to do it away from home was a big moment. I was a little disappointed that I could not capitalize on it but I know in future opportunities with come and I will have to keep working hard.Q. We saw your father dance and rejoice after seeing you in action during the IPL. How good did that feel?A. It felt so good. He has made me work so hard, help me get here and to know he is happy and enjoying me game. What better than this for your father from a son..Q. What do you think of India’s prospects in the World Cup..A. India has got bright chances because we are good in all departments of the game. Also our England record in ICC events. And we have openers who have done well and if you have performing openers in England, what else do you want. Also Read | Mixed IPL season, didn’t pay off whenever I tried to do extra: Shubman GillAlso Read | Shubman Gill’s father doing bhangra in Mohali impresses Shah Rukh KhanAlso Read | Shubman Gill is a prodigy and the next big thing in Indian cricket: Robin UthappaFor sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports.
