FIFA latest: Brazilian legend confirms intention to run for presidency

first_img Zico Brazilian legend Zico has announced he intends to stand for the Fifa presidency after admitting the corruption scandal engulfing football’s governing body has saddened him.Current president Sepp Blatter revealed he was to stand down from his position just four days after being re-elected for a fifth term at the helm last month.Zico, 52, was speaking at a football skills centre in Rio de Janeiro, and said it was his “duty” to stand amidst an investigation launched into racketeering and bribes by a US justice department.“It’s sad for our sport to see what is happening in football today – the corruption… and the hard work of many other good people wasted – and I see it as my duty to use my experience and knowledge to try and stand for the presidency.”Although he has played and managed in countries around the world, the former Brazil captain has little experience in football administration at any senior level.Blatter has pledged to step down once his successor is chosen – likely to be in December. 1last_img read more
