SIX BROTHELS BUSTED IN LETTERKENNY DURING CRACKDOWN ON SEX INDUSTRY

first_imgBREAKING NEWS: Gardai have raided SIX houses in Letterkenny which they believe were operating as brothels. The swoops took place yesterday afternoon as part of Operation Quest – an investigation aimed at cracking down on the sex industry.More than 20 officers including Gardai and Immigration officials carried out the raids on the houses. The raids were part of an intelligence-led operation.A number of people were interviewed by Gardai but no arrests were made.A senior Garda told Donegaldaily.com that cash, laptop computers and other documentation was seized during the raids. One of the raids took place at a house just yards off the town’s Main Street. The Gardai in Donegal are liaising with their counterparts in the PSNI as part of the investigation. The Garda spokesman confirmed they are examining the possibility that there is an element of ‘human trafficking” involved in the raids in Co Donegal.“This was part of an overall nationwide operation and because of our close proximity to the border, we are liaising with our counterparts in Northern Ireland.“No arrests were made but vital information has been gathered in our investigations into the illegal sex trade in Co Donegal and across the State,” he said.Gardai are particularly concerned about prostitutes being brought into Donegal against their will and kept as ‘slaves’. Darwinians Claim to See Evolution Happening Now

first_imgUnable to see evolutionary progress in the fossil record, some Darwinians try to claim they are watching it before our eyes.Since Darwin’s time, the fossil record has been a graveyard of evolutionary theories. Darwin knew it and mumbled out the record’s incompleteness. Stephen Jay Gould famously commented that sudden appearance followed by stasis was the “trade secret of paleontology.” Molecular clock studies often disagree with morphological studies, even granting millions of Darwin Years. Since they can’t find gradual evolution in the record, some Darwinians look for evidence of change in living organisms, including people. Their illustrations can appear quite ridiculous. Before reading the following examples, one must keep an eye on the ball. The ball is not just any change, but positive, innovative change by unguided natural selection that could take a bacterium to a human, given enough time. To claim that disease represents evolution, for instance, would be no more helpful to Darwinism than a company’s balance sheet that reported only losses.Evolutionary geneticists spot natural selection happening now in people (Hakhamanesh Mostafavi at The Conversation). How can you have evolution without speciation and reproductive isolation? If Mostafavi’s view of natural selection prevails, then every tiny variation within the human species becomes evidence for Darwinian evolution! It means that your own children have evolved from you. But even Mostafavi knows that evolution is supposed to be bigger than that:Cartoon by J. Beverly Greene for Creation-Evolution HeadlinesHuman evolution can seem like a phenomenon of the distant past which applies only to our ancestors living millions of years ago. But human evolution is ongoing. To evolve simply means that mutations – the accidental changes to genes that happen normally in the process of copying DNA – are becoming more or less common in the population over time. These changes can happen by chance, because the individuals who reproduced happened to carry a particular mutation somewhat more often than individuals who didn’t have children. They can also happen because of natural selection, when carriers of a specific mutation are better able to survive, reproduce or tend to their family members – and therefore leave more descendants. Every biological adaptation, from the ability of humans to walk upright on two feet to flight in birds, ultimately traces back to natural selection acting on these minute changes, generation after generation. So humans are definitely still evolving….Mostafavi is equivocating here about the definition of evolution. The examples he gives, like genes for lactose intolerance, do nothing to change Homo sapiens into another fitter species. He calls smoking evolution. He calls genes for Alzheimer’s Disease evolution. Can he point to any inherited trait that will help humans of the future grow a wing or a new sense organ? Of course not. None of this is evidence for Darwinian evolution by natural selection. Calling his minor variations “evolution” (especially when they are deleterious) amounts to blowing smoke.Great Tits May Be Evolving Bigger Beaks. Here’s Why. (National Geographic). Before proceeding, let us quickly calm our female readers by pointing out that the “great tit” (we didn’t name it) is a beautiful bird that lives in England (not in the Grand Tetons). Here’s a picture of one.National Geographic loses no time to credit Darwin for a slight change in beak size here, saying in the subtitle, “Since Darwin’s time, birds have served as models for the wonders of evolution—and this study was no exception.”They just keep coming back.Reporter Jason Bittel calls on evolutionist Lewis Spurgin (U of East Anglia) to celebrate another triumph of evolution by claiming that humans are modifying the birds’ evolution by setting up bird feeders. And yet Bittel is not even sure that the feeders caused a slight change in beak size between populations in the U.K. and the Netherlands. No matter; start the Darwin party!“We know that evolution by natural selection produces peacocks’ tails and giraffes’ necks and that sort of thing,” says Spurgin, whose findings were published today in Science….“But it also works in much more subtle ways that are much more difficult to observe.”This is just another case of making mountains out of molehills, like Darwinians did with “Darwin’s finches” on the Galapagos. Jonathan Wells roundly debunked that example of Icons of Evolution. How much easier could he dispense with this one? He would certainly call it a case of Zombie Science – dead arguments for Darwinism rising from the dead in the media.Spurgin was rebuked by other biologists for making too much of this, but he was too drunk on Darwine to stop partying:For Spurgin, this is all part of the fun. “I don’t imagine that Darwin in his wildest dreams could have thought that this stuff would have been happening,” he says.So do evolutionists really think these little birds with their tiny beaks reveal anything about Darwinism? In their dreams. Dreaming about natural selection is a cash cow in Britain. Science Daily indicates that Spurgin’s Darwine party was “funded by the European Research Council and the Natural Environment Research Council and supported by the Edward Grey Institute, University of Oxford.”Flu forecasting tool uses evolution to make earlier predictions (UChicago Medicine). Evolutionists keep trying to make a big deal out of influenza “evolution”, but the flu has never evolved into non-flu. This press release tries to make evolutionary theory sound useful. The team knows this is not evolution, but they credited Darwin anyway. Each year, four influenza strains circulate in the human population: H3N2, H1N1, and two B variants. These viruses spread seasonally each year because of a phenomenon known as antigenic drift. They evolve just enough to evade human immune systems, but not enough to develop into completely new versions of the virus. In other words, they are just variants of the same virus strains. The ones that “drift” enough from the antigen in the vaccine don’t get killed off. But they are still flu viruses, not even completely new versions of the flu virus. If the team can forecast what the new strain will look like earlier, that’s well and good, but this kind of ‘horizontal’ variation is not what Darwin had in mind. Viruses are not even independent organisms. Is biology behind your political views? (Phys.org). This question collapses with the self-refuting fallacy. “People can be biologically predisposed to certain feelings toward politics and society,” the proposition goes. But if biology predisposes one’s political views, then it also predisposes one’s scientific views. [Cue sound of short circuit.]The cartoon says it. Darwinism is kept aloft by the hot air of those whose careers depend on it.Our thanks to J. Beverly Greene for the illustration.(Visited 903 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0last_img read more

Monitoring spotted wing drosophila

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest A relatively new but already widespread winged pest to Ohio small fruit growers can cause significant crop damage but, if spotted early, can be managed to avoid losses, according to an entomologist with the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences at The Ohio State University. While spotted wing drosophila may look like a common vinegar fly, it instead has the potential to wipe out entire fruit crops because of its propensity to attack healthy ripening fruit, said Celeste Welty, an Ohio State University Extension entomologist and associate professor of entomology.“The bad news about this pest is that is it widespread and causes significant damage,” said Welty, who also has an appointment with the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center. “But once you identify it and know it is impacting your crops, it can be managed and beaten back. Early detection is a critical part of managing this pest.”To help growers learn new management tips for spotted wing drosophila and new methods to trap and get rid of the pest, Welty, along with Jim Jasinski, an OSU Extension educator and integrated pest management specialist, will offer a webinar May 6 from 10:30 a.m. to noon. The webinar will teach participants the basics of adult monitoring with traps, cultural controls, how to manage spotted wing drosophila with insecticides once detected, and how to determine if fruit is infested with larvae using a simple salt water test, she said.“The salt water test to determine if the larvae are present in the fruit requires putting the fruit in a plastic zippered storage bag or 1 quart container filled with warm, salty water and waiting 15 minutes,” Welty said. “The bags or container with fruit infestation will show little larvae floating to the top of the salt water.”Spotted wing drosophila is a fly that targets fruit crops, including cherries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, grapes, peaches and plums, and sometimes strawberries, pears, apples and cherry tomatoes. The pest causes damage through larval feeding on ripening fruit. Damage starts as a tiny scar on the skin of the fruit, with the skin collapsing in two or three days and mold developing. The pest is known to cause significant losses for fruit growers in several states, including Michigan, where many blueberry, bramble and strawberry growers reported up to 50 percent fruit loss in 2012, according to a report from Michigan State University Extension. In Ohio, spotted wing drosophila was detected in Champaign, Clinton, Warren, Montgomery, Guernsey, Holmes, Wayne, Medina, Wood, Fulton, Fairfield and Meigs counties in 2012, Welty said. And the pest was spotted in 37 Ohio counties in 2013, she said.“Spotted wing drosophila was a huge problem for growers in 2013, but because more growers are learning about the pest, spotted wing drosophila was a smaller issue in 2014,” Welty said. “In 2012, the pest was still new and caught everyone by surprise.”Thanks to training offered by OSU Extension on spotted wing drosophila, more growers were expecting it in 2014 and knew more about what to do about it, she said.“Once you find spotted wing drosophila, it takes rigorous insecticide use to manage it, including spraying weekly using a pesticide that can be applied close to harvest,” Welty said. Some growers who do not want to spray are abandoning the production of berry crops until a biological control tactic can be developed, Welty said. The adult male spotted wing drosophila is distinguished from other fruit flies by spots on its wings that are visible with the naked eye and two dark bands on its front legs that can be viewed with a 40x magnifier. The adult female spotted wing drosophila is distinguished from other fruit flies because of its saw-like, hard ovipositor, which also can be viewed with a 40x magnifier, Welty said.“Growers can determine if spotted wing drosophila is in their crops by setting up traps to monitor any activity,” she said. The webinar will discuss trapping options, including a homemade one that may be more difficult to use or a purchased option that is easer to manage thanks to a new lure that is specialized to attract spotted wing drosophila.“Growers who’d prefer to avoid using pesticides can instead try growing black raspberries or June harvest strawberries, as these two crops don’t seem to as much of a problem with spotted wing drosophila,” Welty said. “There is also a pesticide available to use that is effective and is allowed in organic growing.”Other management tips include:* Do not delay harvesting: Pick as soon as fruit ripen.* Keep harvested fruit cooled as soon as picked.* Sanitation is critical. Collect and destroy unharvested or damaged fruit every two days. Put culls in a clear plastic bag and leave it in the sun for one week, or bury it 2 feet deep.* Netting is a mechanical control option, especially for organic growers.* If any spotted wing drosophila are found in the trap, then the fruit crop needs protection by insecticide, starting when fruits begin to ripen or berries start to turn color, until the final harvest.* Spray every seven days with insecticides that provide seven days residual activity.* Do a salt test weekly to see if the control program is working well: Put a sample of fruit in a bag with warm salty water and wait 15 minutes to see if any larvae are present. The May 6 webinar will also be archived and posted on at ipm.osu.edu and atentomology.osu.edu/welty/fruit_info1/Fruit_info.html. Red states, blue states and green water

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest By Matt ReeseI have been doing this writing/reporting/interviewing job for a while now. One of the first things I learned was, even at the risk of making myself sound dumb, I always try to admit my lack of knowledge about something and ask the questions needed to amend it. This is a good general policy and, in my case, it is important for very selfish reasons. If I don’t know something and ask a dumb question to get the answer, I look silly to that person. If I do not ask the question and write about something I do not really know about, then I instead end up looking silly to thousands of readers. A lack of understanding has a way of compounding problems moving forward. In short, if you don’t know, do the leg work to find out the answers before you take action. Thus far, Ohio agriculture has been pushing (fairly successfully) for this very strategy in terms of the ongoing water quality challenges in the state. That appears to be changing, though, as political pressure to address the complex problem increases. If I took a poll, I would imagine that 100 out of 100 Ohioans would want to drastically reduce or eliminate harmful algal blooms in Ohio’s lakes. Zero out of 100 Ohioans would definitively know how to accomplish that goal, though I am sure some would act like they had the solution without really knowing the answer. One of those Ohioans, apparently, would be Gov. John Kasich. There have been agricultural rumblings about this for awhile now, but last month in the Cleveland Plain Dealer it said this: Kasich, speaking to Ohio newspaper publishers Wednesday, said he was disappointed the legislature hasn’t acted to further restrict fertilizer application, which directly contributes to algal blooms in Lake Erie…Kasich said he supports farmers, too, but something should be done to address the minority of farmers who pollute the lake. Kasich spokesman Jim Lynch said an executive order is in the works, but the details have not yet been determined. With experts who have studied the details of water quality for their entire careers unable to come up with clear solutions, it seems certain the contents of the executive order are likely to fall short of successful, whatever they are. Kasich himself has repeatedly demonstrated a lack of basic agricultural understanding and, recently, he even struggled with the specifics of his administration’s recent proposal for the Lake Erie impairment designation. In a gubernatorial gaff, Kasich muddled his way though responses to questions at the Michigan Press Association convention in Lansing on May 11 concerning the topic. MLive (a Michigan-based news website) reporter Garret Ellison asked straight-forward questions and got flustered responses. Here is an excerpt about Kasich’s plans to regulate:John Kasich: So sir, you know, part of leadership is not just to bang the table and get out a sledgehammer to get your way. I think we’ve seen a lot of that lately. It doesn’t work very well. So that’s the way that I lead, and we’ll see where this goes. And when you raise phosphorous, that’s all from fertilizer, okay? I answered that question. So you came up with these terms or whatever and I’m telling you we’re working on it. And we are reducing, but we’re going to have to have even more action done.Garret Ellison: You mean mandatory action, or voluntary action?John Kasich: No, no, no. We’ll have regulatory action, okay? …. And by the way I would probably have to do it unilaterally because we’ll never get it through the legislature, okay? The interview, though embarrassing, will be algae under the bridge compared to the perceived foolishness of the Kasich Administration after passing executive orders to fix the problem and inevitably failing. After running a campaign and getting elected as governor (twice) on an anti-regulation pro-business platform, it seems shortsighted (at best) for Kasich to throw in some late-term regulations that will undoubtedly add bureaucratic hoops for farmers to jump through and undoubtedly NOT solve the problem of harmful algae in Lake Erie. Piling more rules on agriculture — already among the most heavily regulated industries in Ohio — is not the answer. In contrast to the politically driven and premature action of Kasich’s executive order plans directed at regulating fertilizer, Ohio agriculture has invested millions into proactively asking the challenging questions to determine the real causes of the problems and finding some real solutions. This has certainly proven to be a challenging endeavor and the process has not been quick. Finding real solutions will continue to take more time. As Joe Cornely with Ohio Farm Bureau sagely told the Cleveland Plain Dealer, “We’re not saying go slow, we’re saying be smart” and “We’re not going to be able to fix a problem like that or agriculture’s piece of the problem in a fashion where things get done overnight.”The slow progress in improving water quality is understandably frustrating for residents of places like Toledo where issues with harmful algae in the water are a part of life and there is no doubt political pressure is mounting. Kasich is likely yearning for the support of the 100% of people who want to improve water quality as he considers another presidential run after his time as Ohio’s governor is up. But throwing together regulations that are not based on the reality of what is happening will not make the water better any faster. Those regulations will only succeed in bogging down rural Ohio and upsetting rural America. Who was it that won the presidential election for Donald Trump again?Kasich has already illustrated his lack of understanding regarding agriculture and water quality numerous times, and I think if he does make a run for the White House he’ll find that an August/September algal bloom is not all that far removed from the November elections. By taking the plunge into the murky waters of more nutrient regulation, any future “Kasich for President” campaign may end up focused less on red states and blue states, and more on the green water in one state.last_img read more
