The Bundesliga is back, so can Dortmund catch Bayern?

first_imgShare on: WhatsApp Can Bayern Munich see off the chasing pack to claim an eighth straight title as the Bundesliga returns behind closed doors?Berlin, Germany | AFP |  Bayern Munich are in pole position to win an eighth straight title, but Borussia Dortmund lead the chasing pack and are spearheaded by Erling Braut Haaland as the Bundesliga comes out of its coronavirus-enforced hibernation this weekend.AFP Sport takes a look at what is at stake on the field when the German top flight ends a two-month shutdown to play out its final nine matchdays.– Some things stay the same… –Teams have undergone testing and been forced into quarantine training camps because of the virus, and all matches will be played behind closed doors in the league with the highest attendances in world football. So this will not be the Bundesliga as we know it, but something else may be just as before — Bayern, the country’s most successful club, are on track to win another title, which would be their eighth in a row. They had put a patchy start to the season under Niko Kovac behind them before the shutdown, with Hansi Flick coming in as coach and Bayern winning 10 and drawing one of their last 11 league games. The Bavarians are four points clear of Dortmund at the top and have been busy since their last game, with Flick signing a new contract until 2023.Key players Thomas Mueller and Alphonso Davies followed suit by penning extensions of their own, while former striker Miroslav Klose has joined as assistant coach. With Robert Lewandowski scoring 25 goals in 23 games, Bayern are formidable. They still have to visit Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen, although it remains to be seen how much home advantage will matter without fans.– Watch out for Haaland –It could still just about be a four-horse title race, with Borussia Moenchengladbach six points off the pace in fourth, but Dortmund are best-placed to stop Bayern.Lucien Favre’s side were last seen going out of the Champions League to Paris Saint-Germain, but before that were in thrilling form led by young stars Haaland and Jadon Sancho. They won seven out of eight league games after 19-year-old Norwegian powerhouse Haaland arrived from Red Bull Salzburg. He scored nine goals in that run.Dortmund, though, will not be able to rely on their fans who usually pack the 81,000-capacity Signal Iduna Park and their next two home games — against Ruhr rivals Schalke on Saturday and then Bayern — will lose much of their edge as a result.“Having to play behind closed doors is an enormous challenge, especially for a club like BVB, which draws a lot of strength from the passion of its supporters,” admitted Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke. Dortmund also must still visit Leipzig, who reached the Champions League quarter-finals before the suspension but whose patchy league form after the winter break saw them fall off the pace.In Timo Werner, they have their own fearsome striker. And in Julian Nagelsmann, 32, they have one of Europe’s most exciting young coaches, so anything is possible.Gladbach were the last team to beat Bayern in the league but would now settle for holding off fifth-placed Leverkusen to secure Champions League qualification. There are two points between those sides, who are due to meet next weekend.Beneath them, in the fight for one Europa League spot, Schalke, Wolfsburg, Freiburg and Hoffenheim are all within two points.– Bremen in danger –At the bottom Paderborn prop up the division but the plight of Werder Bremen is more striking. The four-time champions are four points adrift of Fortuna Dusseldorf in the relegation play-off place and eight points from outright safety. They have a game in hand, but are in danger of following the path of Hamburg and Stuttgart, two giants to have been relegated in recent seasons.“We all know how precarious our league position is. That’s motivation enough,” said sporting director Frank Baumann when asked about playing home games without fans.Elsewhere, Hertha Berlin seem far enough clear of relegation trouble but it has been a chaotic campaign in the capital.Bruno Labbadia has become the club’s fourth coach this season since the shutdown began, with Jurgen Klinsmann’s short-lived time in charge ending.last_img read more

People with disabilities to gain access to new transport training centre

first_imgA new national transport training centre will open next year for people with disabilities to help them to confidently and independently use public transport, an Oireachtas committee has heard. The National Council for the Blind (NCBI) launched their pre-budget submission for Budget 2020 as part of a political briefing for Oireachtas members on Wednesday. The location of the centre will be announced by the end of July and it is expected construction works will be completed next year. The submission focuses on six key Government Departments where urgent action is required to assist the almost 55,000 people living with sight loss in Ireland, a number which is steadily increasing. There are 2,068 blind or visually impaired people living in County Donegal.Kevin Kelly, Head of Policy, Advocacy and Campaigns with NCBI said: “While our Pre-Budget Submission recommends changes across many Government departments to improve the lives of people who are blind and vision impaired, of particular importance is the need to expand the Free Travel Scheme and ensure universal access to Assistive Technology.“Presently, the Free Travel Pass offered by the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection is hugely valued by those who can avail of it. “Being able to travel independently on public transport is so important for people who are blind or vision impaired. However, the eligibility criteria to obtain a Free Travel Pass is very restrictive and inflexible.“Over 700 of our service users cannot see enough to obtain a driver’s licence yet do not qualify to be registered blind and obtain the Free Travel Pass so they have to incur additional expenses to avail of public transport or taxis. This inequity can be removed in Budget 2020 to include those with a long-term eye condition that renders their level of vision insufficient to obtain a driver’s licence.”Its primary aim of the NCBI is to provide short term comprehensive instruction designed to teach people with disabilities how to travel safely and independently using public transportation. It will include full-size replicas of bus, train and tram vehicles that will be used to familiarise users with how to safely and confidently use these modes on a day-to-day basis.Separately, funding for assistive technology allocated by the HSE is fragmented and uncoordinated. As a result, many people who are blind and visually impaired are unable to afford the upfront costs of essential assistive technology and have to go without meaning they are both economically and socially disadvantaged. Advertisement “There needs to be fair and equal access to assistive technology for all people who are blind and visually impaired across the country, regardless of where the person lives,” NCBI advocate Aoife Watson said.“At the moment it is a postcode lottery!“Currently, the HSE does not fund smartphones under the Technical Aids Grant, despite smartphones being often the most accessible for a person with sight loss and the developments in technology such as the Siri intelligent assistance tool, built-in screen reader (Voice Over) and screen magnification are indispensable,” Watson added.“Ironically if they moved to fund these devices it could result in savings as the assistive technology comes as standard rather than having to be a separate purchase.” Advertisement People with disabilities to gain access to new transport training centre was last modified: June 27th, 2019 by Staff WriterShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)last_img read more

This Tiny House Is Cheap

first_img“The prefab tiny house France is the prototype, which is part of our ongoing research into the feasibility of mass-produced prefabricated tiny houses,” architect Joshua Woodsman said in a news release. “This concept is based on our long-term experience with tiny house construction, creating easy-to-follow plans and books for DIY constructors.”Woodman said in an email that he hoped the France would be available worldwide in two years at a cost of between $1,500 and $3,000 (U.S.), not including shipping.Panels are insulated with mineral wool between load-bearing studs, Woodsman said.As Construction Dive points out, the France will face the same local zoning hurdles as other small dwellings should it enter the U.S. market. Yet a number of communities are making it easier for tiny houses to get established in hopes they will ease a housing shortage or provide new options for the homeless. The company also offers plans for eight small dwellings developed by Woodsman, a recent Master of Architecture graduate who says he’d like to spread the tiny house movement around the world. The pin-up girl theme is evident in photos of his houses, all of which are named for women: the Ginger, the Alexis, the Bessie, the Magdalene.“The verb ‘pin up’ related with ‘pin up some construction plans on the board in your hobbyman corner’ with pins,” Woodsman explained of the company’s name. “Second meaning related with ‘pin-up girls’ phenomenon in the U.S. advertising. I just joined [these] two meanings of the world. Pin-up houses is based on this thought process.” RELATED ARTICLES A Czech Republic firm that sells plans for a line of tiny houses has developed a prefabricated model that can be assembled in three hours and will cost no more than $3,000 when it hits the U.S.The house, called “France,” consists of 21 insulated panels that a team of three can put together with lengths of threaded rod in an afternoon. The red, white and blue house, all 74 square feet of it, is divided into three rooms — a sleeping area, a multipurpose living area in the center, and a cooking zone — but it doesn’t come with any plumbing or wiring. The France can be taken apart as easily as it’s assembled, and thus moved if owners want it in a different location. There are some rough edges in the detailing, as evidenced in photos of the project as well as in a video at the website of developer Pin-Up Houses. But at $16 a square foot, the France is dramatically cheaper than many of the more stylish tiny houses on the market.center_img Lumber Store Chain Now Offers Tiny HousesWhy Tiny Houses Make SenseBuilders Aren’t Jumping on the Tiny House BandwagonTiny Houses Get a Leg Up in Arizonalast_img read more

Ohio States Urban Meyer Tom Herman experienced coaching backup quarterbacks

OSU coach Urban Meyer stands during a game against Iowa Oct. 19 at Ohio Stadium. OSU won, 34-24.Lantern file photoWith senior quarterback Braxton Miller’s health status in doubt after he re-injured his shoulder on Monday, Ohio State football fans won’t have to look far to see how the current coaching regime does when a signal-caller goes down.Coach Urban Meyer and co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Tom Herman were both around just last season when Miller missed two full games, and the majority of another, after injuring his knee.Miller was first injured on OSU’s opening drive against San Diego State Sept. 7, 2013. Then-backup quarterback Kenny Guiton, who has since graduated, entered the game and passed for 152 yards and two touchdowns in a 42-7 victory.Guiton’s success continued in historic form as he set OSU records for the longest pass play and the most passing touchdowns in a game over the following two weeks. In all, Guiton played in 13 of 14 games in 2013, including the two aforementioned starts. He passed for a total of 749 yards and 14 touchdowns while only throwing two interceptions. The Buckeyes were 2-0 when Guiton started, on top of the win against SDSU.While Guiton slotted smoothly into Meyer and Herman’s system, both coaches have had experience with replacing quarterbacks even before coming to OSU.Meyer’s previous coaching stop was at Florida, where his No. 1 quarterback played in every game all six seasons while he was in charge. Before that, Meyer spent two years at Utah.In 2003, Meyer’s first year with the Utes, Brett Elliott, then a senior, started the season on top of the depth chart at quarterback. Elliott broke his wrist two games into the season, paving the way for then-sophomore Alex Smith.Smith went on to lead Utah to a 9-1 record in 10 starts that season while throwing 15 touchdowns and just three interceptions. He then led the Utes to an undefeated record his senior year before being named a Heisman Trophy finalist. Smith eventually became the No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers.Between Smith and Guiton, the last two quarterbacks to come in for an injured starter under Meyer, their teams have totaled an 11-1 record in games they started in those seasons.Since 2007, Herman has been an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Rice, Iowa State and OSU.At Rice, where Herman coached in 2007 and 2008, his No. 1 quarterback, Chase Clement, played in all 25 games. But while at Iowa State, Herman had at least two quarterbacks start at least one game in each of his three seasons. In 2009 Austen Arnaud played in 12 games and threw for 2,015 yards, 14 touchdowns and 13 interceptions for the Cyclones under Herman. Backup Jerome Tiller played in seven games, including a start, and tossed one touch down compared to four interceptions. The two quarterbacks led Iowa State to a 7-6 overall record. The following year, Arnaud started nine games and threw 13 touchdowns with 10 interceptions. Tiller started another game, and threw one touchdown in eight total appearances. The Cyclones finished the season 5-7.In Herman’s final season before leaving Iowa State for OSU, 2011, Steele Jantz started seven games at quarterback while Jared Barnett stated six under center. Both threw for more than 1,000 yards, but combined for 17 interceptions compared to 16 touchdowns. Iowa State went 6-7 after starting that season 3-0.While Herman and Meyer both helped the Buckeyes to success when Miller was out injured last season, it is yet to be seen if they can find that same success in 2014.The extent of Miller’s injury was not yet known as of Tuesday morning, pending the results of an MRI on Miller’s shoulder. With out without the senior in the lineup, OSU is scheduled to begin its season Aug. 30 against Navy at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. Kickoff is set for noon. read more

Football Urban Meyer investigation to be completed Sunday

Urban Meyer prepares to lead the Buckeyes out on to the field prior to the Ohio State-Iowa game on Nov. 4. Ohio State lost 55-24. Credit: Jack Westerheide | Photo EditorThe investigation into Ohio State head football coach Urban Meyer’s knowledge of domestic abuse allegations surrounding a former assistant coach will conclude on time, ending exactly on the 14-day deadline originally proposed by the university, Ohio State announced Friday. The statement went on to say that the investigators will “prepare a report for the working group to be delivered next week.” Once the independent group, chaired by former Ohio House Speaker Jo Ann Davidson, receives the report, they will present it to the Board of Trustees in an executive session to be held next week. University President Michael Drake will announce his decision for any response to the investigation “following deliberations with the board, and appropriate time for consideration.”The exact time and date of that meeting was not released in the statement, but the university is required by law to provide advance public notice of at least 24 hours. Drake told WOSU’s Ann Fisher on Thursday that the investigation would be “finished when it’s finished” without providing an idea of when that might be.Ohio State placed Meyer on paid administrative leave on Aug. 1 shortly after announcing it was going to examine if Meyer knew about and properly handled reports of domestic abuse from former wide receivers coach Zach Smith in 2015. Smith was fired on July 23 after his ex-wife, Courtney, filed a domestic violence civil protection order against him.Ohio State originally gave itself a 14-day deadline to complete the investigation on Aug. 5, which means the university will meet the deadline it self-imposed.The independent group has overseen the efforts of an investigative team led by former Chair of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission Mary Jo White, who also is the senior chair with the law firm Debevoise and Plimpton. read more

When you asked me in the press conference I had no idea about it because I had to go doing different stuff pretty much immediately and I didn’t see him on the pitch because I spoke to Carlo [Ancelotti].“The rehab has already started pretty much, the same for Joe.“Trent, we have to see. For him, it is day by day how we judge it. It’s not cool but as long as we still have enough players, it is our job to always find a solution for it – and we will have a solution for the weekend, but of course, it is not perfect.”The German added that full-back Nathaniel Clyne has been back in training for the last four days and is set to return from injury.last_img read more
