Kenta Maeda roughed up early, Dodgers never recover in loss to Cubs

first_img Dodgers hit seven home runs, sweep Colorado Rockies “Today I just think early on he just didn’t have his fastball command,” Roberts said of Maeda. “You could see a couple of those at-bats early on, guys – (Kris) Bryant, (Javier) Baez – sitting on his slider. You could see them sitting soft. When they can’t respect or trust that you’re going to throw your fastball in the strike zone then it just makes your margin that much tougher.”The Cubs climbed all over Maeda in the first inning, sending nine batters to the plate and bringing four of them around to score.A questionable full-count call on Baez might actually have been the pivotal pitch of the 37-pitch inning. Maeda dropped to a knee on the mound when he didn’t get the call from home-plate umpire Ted Barrett.“I don’t have particular comments about that,” Maeda said through his interpreter after the game. “It’s something the umpires have control of and I have to obey those calls.“I believe if I was able to command my pitches better I would have gotten some of the calls. Maybe.”After Baez walked to load the bases, Maeda collected himself long enough to strike out Kyle Schwarber. But Willson Contreras bounced a two-out double down the third base line and three runs scored. When Daniel Descalso dropped his own double down the left field line, Contreras scored as well.A two-run home run by Anthony Rizzo in the second made it a 6-0 headstart for the Cubs and the Dodgers never recovered.“Tonight was a funky one, I think both ways,” Roberts said of the strike zone. He also had issues with a Baez single in the second inning when Roberts felt he left the baseline to avoid a tag by first baseman David Freese.“The umpires do the best they can but I think tonight, for me, there were some inconsistencies there. So when you’re trying to calibrate a zone and you can’t really bank on the consistency it makes it tough – for the pitchers and the hitters as well.”The Dodgers could only manage single runs in the third and seventh innings against Cubs starter Jose Quintana. But the seventh inning could have been bigger.A.J. Pollock singled, went to third on a double by Cody Bellinger and trotted home on a ground out by Chris Taylor. After Austin Barnes walked, Max Muncy came up as a pinch-hitter with the bases loaded and two outs.Related Articles Urias had a 3.66 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 22 strikeouts in 19-2/3 innings over those four starts, saving the best for last – he allowed one hit and struck out nine in six innings at Milwaukee on Thursday. Batters hit .189 against Urias in those four starts. He is not in the bullpen because Maeda has outpitched him. With Hyun-Jin Ryu and Clayton Kershaw back in the rotation and Rich Hill on his way, Urias is in the bullpen because the Dodgers planned for him to be there from the start of the season. Mindful that the young left-hander is in his first full season since 2016 and has been back on a mound for less than a year since returning from shoulder surgery, the Dodgers are not looking to pile too many innings on Urias this season – figure less than 100.The move to the bullpen is a way to let those innings drip out over the course of the summer so there will be some left to pour into September and October.Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has said he will use Urias in a “hybrid role” and not as a “conventional” reliever. That means multi-inning stints followed by multiple days off.It is the best use of Urias only after you accept that there must be restrictions on his workload this season. Maybe that will curb the desire to say he should be starting instead of Maeda. (AP Photo/Jim Young)ExpandCHICAGO — It is going to happen every time a Dodgers starting pitcher has a bad outing now with Julio Urias watching from the bullpen.Tuesday was just the first time.Kenta Maeda was roughed up for six runs in the first two innings and the Chicago Cubs cruised to a 7-2 victory over the Dodgers.Moved to the bullpen after making four starts, Urias followed Maeda and pitched two scoreless innings, striking out four of the seven batters he faced while allowing no hits. But Barrett punched Muncy out on another borderline call with the count full. Muncy dropped his bat and threw both hands to his helmet in disbelief.“I’m not going to comment on him calling it a strike or a ball,” Muncy said. “The only thing I will comment on is he felt the need to justify his call immediately without me saying anything towards him. All I did was put my hands on my head and turn around. He felt he needed to justify his call and I didn’t want to hear.”Barrett did get in Muncy’s face, following him a few feet away from the plate before Muncy turned his back and walked away.“I didn’t listen,” Muncy said when asked what Barrett said. “Again, he called what he called. I’m not going to comment on that because I don’t want to get in trouble.”Roberts would not blame the loss on either call but clearly felt the Dodgers had been on the wrong end at two critical points.“You never want to say that one pitch or one play is the difference in a game. But there were some at-bats, some pitches that the game could have went a different direction,” he said.“The Muncy at-bat, we’ve got Quintana 110, 112 pitches. We’ve got him stressed. They don’t want to go to the ’pen right there. I like the matchup there, I really do. I thought Max took a great at-bat. I think the pitch before, the 2-2 pitch, was essentially the same location. So as a hitter when you see that get called a ball and you kind of recall that location and see essentially the same pitch and get rung up on it. Those are sort of tough.”center_img Fire danger is on Dave Roberts’ mind as Dodgers head to San Francisco Dodgers’ Max Muncy trying to work his way out of slow start Cody Bellinger homer gives Dodgers their first walkoff win of season Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Errorlast_img read more

Plea change hearing scheduled for Worth County woman accused of driving drunk with five kids in car

first_imgOSAGE — A plea change hearing has been scheduled for a Kensett woman charged with child endangerment after allegedly driving drunk with children in her vehicle. The Mitchell County Sheriff’s Department said they received a 9-1-1 call at about 3:10 on the afternoon of August 19th of last year after a report of a vehicle that was driving all over the road on State Highway 9 near the Mitchell and Worth county line. The person calling in the complaint stated they had been forced off the road by the vehicle. The Sheriff’s Department says they stopped 24-year-old Rebecca Golden on the west side of Osage. Authorities say Golden’s speech was slurred and that she had a blood alcohol content of .225, almost three times over the legal limit. They say the five children found in the vehicle ranged in age from under three to nine years old. Besides being charged with five counts of child endangerment, Golden was also charged with operating while intoxicated first offense.Golden was scheduled to have her trial start on February 27th, but online court records show a plea change hearing has been scheduled for March 26th in Mitchell County District Court.last_img read more
