Tripura government bans unregistered e-rickshaws

first_imgThe Tripura government has banned the plying of unregistered battery-operated rickshaws, also known as e-rickshaws, causing disruption for commuters. The deadline to register the vehicles ended on July 31. A senior official in the Transport Department said a large number of e-rickshaw owners had failed to register their vehicles. “The non-compliance had continued despite a few extensions in the deadline,” he told The Hindu on Saturday. The Tripura High Court has issued several directions regarding e-rickshaws since March 2017, but the orders were not implemented. The erstwhile CPI(M)-led Left Front government had taken a decision in July 2014 to register and license e-rickshaws but no headway was made. Providing employment Authorities have been in favour of e-rickshaws as they are a cheap mode of transport and provide employment to youth. Following the expiry of the deadline, teams have been deployed to impound unregistered e-rickshaws. The Battery Rickshaw Welfare Association and the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh have demanded an extension of the deadline.last_img read more

Michael Rhodes ready for a Saracens start after summer rebuild of collarbone

first_img Since you’re here… Share on WhatsApp Share on Facebook Rhodes gives the impression that is a sensation he is yet to experience but it soon becomes clear he had been playing through pain for some time. “The tip of my collarbone, about an inch from the end, broke off,” he said. “After it was misdiagnosed, cartilage formed in that break so basically formed a new joint. I played with that discomfort and with rehabbing and strengthening the muscles around it. I managed to play for four years and the joint that formed; I re-broke that against Clermont. I went for scans and it turned out it was broken, not a dislocation as they thought.”Despite carrying the injury, the South Africa-born blindside flanker appeared in all but one of Saracens 23 Premiership matches, often turning out in the second row, where the team were blighted by injuries. He was ever present throughout their European campaign which culminated with their successful title defence and while six team-mates were picked in the initial Lions touring party, it was Rhodes who was named as the player of the season by his peers.Having arrived at Saracens in the summer of 2015, Rhodes does not become eligible for England until next summer – and he will not quite do so in time to tour South Africa – but he has made his choice and Jones can pick him next autumn, regardless of the fact World Rugby voted in May to extend the residency period to five years. So how did the conversation with Jones go? “Just a brief phone call. He just said: ‘Keep up the good work, I’ve got my eye on you,’ and I think it was just a complimentary call. He’s focusing on the players he’s got. I don’t really expect too much communication until I qualify.”Continuing Saracens’ imperious start to the season is more of a priority and Rhodes starts against Bath on Saturday, having come on with 20 minutes to go at Twickenham and with eight tries already on the scoreboard. Maro Itoje again starts, this time in the second row, while Mako Vunipola, Owen Farrell and Liam Williams are set for their first appearances of the season from the bench. There is still no place for Billy Vunipola, while Anthony Perenise starts at tighthead in Bath’s only change. In Rhodes’ case, ring rust would be an obvious concern considering how little training he managed over the summer but he clearly relishes the heat of battle. “You’ve just got to get through it, get a bit of game hardness and get back into it,” he said. “Training, you can sometimes be a bit tentative in contact. I’m sure there will be times in the next couple of games when it’s a bit sore but that’s just part of coming back. The game is the best place to test it out, get stuck in, get your mind on other things and go balls to the wall.” Share on Pinterest Share on LinkedIn Share on Twitter Share on Messenger Saracens Rugby union Topics Read morecenter_img Share via Email Premiership Support The Guardian England rugby union team features Saracens off to flying start as Schalk Brits humiliates Northampton Eddie Jones … we have a small favour to ask. Shining brightest among Saracens’ galaxy of stars is no easy task but it was an achievement all the more impressive considering Michael Rhodes was playing out of position for large parts of last season. Add in the fact the 29-year-old effectively did so with a broken collarbone and it becomes not only a remarkable feat but also easy to see why Eddie Jones has been in contact. It was a surprise, therefore, to see Rhodes on the bench rather than starting against Northampton last Saturday. That is until he explains how, in the European Cup final in May, he suffered a recurrence of an injury first sustained four years ago, underwent surgery to remove a piece of hip bone and attach it to the collarbone, spent three-and-a-half months in a sling and began pre-season training just a few days before that match. It then becomes astonishing he was on the bench at all.“I injured my shoulder in Cape Town four years ago and it was misdiagnosed when I broke the collarbone. I injured it again when we played Clermont,” the 6ft 6in flanker said. “They had to cut a piece of bone out of my hip and replace a piece of bone in my collarbone with a plate and a couple of things. It ended up being something that could have been prevented four years ago but as it is, it has come right now. The plate is still in. It will remain in there unless it becomes a problem – pain or something like that.” Reuse this contentlast_img read more

Hudsons Hope RCMP publishes policing report for May

first_imgHUDSON’S HOPE, B.C. — Cst. William McKenna with the Hudson’s Hope RCMP has published a policing report which says that police responded to approximately 32 calls for service over the last four weeks. During the month of April, the Hudson’s Hope RCMP issued 58 Motor Vehicle Act Warnings and Violation Tickets. One impaired driver was stopped and charged during this period.   Four check stops were conducted in an effort to combat impaired driving. Cst. McKenna said that the Hudson’s Hope Speed Watch program is progressing and expected to implemented in the next few weeks, and that the detachment is still welcoming volunteers to help with the program. The Hudson’s Hope RCMP was assisted by officers from Fort St John, Chetwynd, and North Peace Traffic Services during an enforcement campaign over the May long weekend. Extra police presence on the highway, on ATVs, and on the water was focused in historically busy areas in an effort to prevent offences and injuries to outdoor enthusiasts. The Hudson’s Hope RCMP Positive Ticketing program has begun and will continue until fall.  Several youths have been “caught in the act” being safe or acting in a positive way such as wearing a bike helmet, using a crosswalk to safely cross the road, or wearing a seatbelt. When officers witness this, the youth can be issued a free ice cream positive ticket. Cst. McKenna extended a big thank you to Belinda Karlin and the staff at Marg’s Mini Mart for partnering with the local RCMP in promoting safety and positivity in our community.  On April 24th, officers responded to a complaint of a shoplifting theft from the Sportsman Inn Liquor store. The suspect was described as a First Nations woman, approximately 20-30 years old, standing 5’5” tall, with a stocky build. She had bleached hair with an orange tint. Anyone with information can contact the RCMP locally or Crime stoppers.   On May 20th, the Hudson’s Hope RCMP were called out to a home on Twelve Mile road for a possible domestic assault. A man was arrested and lodged in cells for a few hours to sober up and was released later in the day.  The file is still being monitored.  On May 20th, the RCMP located a vehicle parked at a local business with expired insurance.  The driver eventually returned to the vehicle and was issued seven violation tickets for multiple infractions. The vehicle was also towed.  Anyone with information regarding current or past investigations can contact the Hudson’s Hope RCMP directly at 250-783-5241 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. The Patriots Are Almost Certainly Not Going 160

When do we get to stop jabbering about the Patriots? Last winter, the New England Patriots marched through the playoffs and won the Super Bowl. Then we spent all spring and summer worrying about whether their quarterback, Tom Brady, had knowingly deflated footballs — and then we had to start the conversation over again when his four-game suspension was overturned. And now that football is actually being played, the Pats are still on everyone’s minds: At 3-0, with the NFL’s second-best SRS rating,1SRS is the Simple Rating System, Pro-Football-Reference.com’s way of adjusting a team’s average scoring margin for the strength of its schedule. (The upstart Falcons are No. 1.) they’ve started so hot as to inspire speculation about another 16-0 season. But the Patriots media frenzy may have finally swallowed itself when Skip Bayless was asked on Tuesday’s “First Take” about New England’s chances of going undefeated and said it was “extremely probable” that the Patriots would go 16-0.We touched on this during a segment of our sports podcast, Hot Takedown (Pats chatter begins at the 7:00 mark), but the notion that it’s “extremely probable” for any team to go 16-0 after three weeks of the season was too absurd for us to confine our dissent to a podcast.Let’s get this out of the way: It’s extremely improbable that New England will win each of its remaining 13 games. According to our Elo ratings (a system for estimating each NFL team’s strength at any given moment), New England has only a 4.4 percent probability of navigating the rest of its schedule without a loss. In other words, if you played out 100 versions of the 2015 season, the Pats would fail to go undefeated in about 96 of them. Bayless is holding out for our real-life timeline to be one of the four leftovers. It’s easy to see why the Patriots are so unlikely to win out. They aren’t even favorites in all of their remaining contests — Elo says there’s a 53 percent chance they lose to Denver on the road in late November. And among the games in which they are favored, they’re far from guaranteed victors. Nine teams have a greater than 20 percent chance of knocking them off — there’s a 42 percent chance they don’t even emerge from their bye week and make it to 4-0 against the Cowboys on Oct. 11. (Granted, Elo is unaware that Dallas will be without QB Tony Romo for that game, but a Romo adjustment would still leave New England with roughly a one-third chance of being upset.)This year’s Patriots team is really good. Through three weeks, the 2015 edition has a slightly better Elo rating (1698) than the 2007 version that went 16-0 had (1697) at the same point in the season.2If this sounds contrary to what I said at the 9:05 mark of this week’s Hot Takedown, it’s because I goofed. There I was referring to the fact that, in the subset of our Elo simulations where New England went 16-0 this season, its final Elo rating of 1820 was slightly lower than the 1832 mark the Pats had after the 2007 regular season. But that’s all down the road — as of now, three weeks in, the 2015 Patriots’ Elo is slightly higher. But the 2007 Patriots were arguably the best team in pro football history (to the extent such a thing exists), and they still required a great deal of luck in close wins in the second half of their schedule. It’s very hard to go undefeated, which is a big part of why streaks capture our imagination. If it were as easy as Bayless seems to think it is, we wouldn’t care as much. Read more: The Best NFL Teams Of All Time, According To Elo read more

Football Urban Meyer investigation to be completed Sunday

Urban Meyer prepares to lead the Buckeyes out on to the field prior to the Ohio State-Iowa game on Nov. 4. Ohio State lost 55-24. Credit: Jack Westerheide | Photo EditorThe investigation into Ohio State head football coach Urban Meyer’s knowledge of domestic abuse allegations surrounding a former assistant coach will conclude on time, ending exactly on the 14-day deadline originally proposed by the university, Ohio State announced Friday. The statement went on to say that the investigators will “prepare a report for the working group to be delivered next week.” Once the independent group, chaired by former Ohio House Speaker Jo Ann Davidson, receives the report, they will present it to the Board of Trustees in an executive session to be held next week. University President Michael Drake will announce his decision for any response to the investigation “following deliberations with the board, and appropriate time for consideration.”The exact time and date of that meeting was not released in the statement, but the university is required by law to provide advance public notice of at least 24 hours. Drake told WOSU’s Ann Fisher on Thursday that the investigation would be “finished when it’s finished” without providing an idea of when that might be.Ohio State placed Meyer on paid administrative leave on Aug. 1 shortly after announcing it was going to examine if Meyer knew about and properly handled reports of domestic abuse from former wide receivers coach Zach Smith in 2015. Smith was fired on July 23 after his ex-wife, Courtney, filed a domestic violence civil protection order against him.Ohio State originally gave itself a 14-day deadline to complete the investigation on Aug. 5, which means the university will meet the deadline it self-imposed.The independent group has overseen the efforts of an investigative team led by former Chair of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission Mary Jo White, who also is the senior chair with the law firm Debevoise and Plimpton. read more

GM in talks to sell Lordstown to Workhorse for EV pickups while

first_img More From Roadshow Enlarge ImageThe last Chevy Cruze to roll off the line came from Lordstown on March 6. General Motors When General Motors in November announced a Thanos snap’s worth of vehicle cuts, plant idles and layoffs, there were a lot of unanswered questions. This week, GM seeks to provide at least some closure with news of a potential sale and the addition of jobs in an area that was affected by The Decimation.General Motors announced on Wednesday that it is in talks to sell its Lordstown Complex in Ohio. GM is currently discussing the idea with Workhorse Group, a company that has supplied green vehicles to UPS and hopes to offer even more electrified work vehicles in the future. But the complex wouldn’t be sold directly to Workhorse, per se — instead, Workhorse’s founder is leading an independent entity that would purchase the facility, with Workhorse commanding a minority interest in said business entity. So, what’ll be built there? According to Steve Burns, Workhorse’s founder, it’ll be new, electric and a truck: “The first vehicle we would plan to build if we were to purchase the Lordstown Complex would be a commercial electric pickup, blending Workhorse’s technology with Lordstown’s manufacturing expertise,” Burns said in a statement. GM’s statement says the facility could start being converted to produce Workhorse vehicles as soon as all parties come to an agreement, which has not been finalized as of this writing. In 2018, Workhorse and UPS announced that the manufacturer would supply UPS with 50 plug-in hybrid delivery vans. Workhorse has also unveiled the W-15 electric pickup, which it brought to CES 2018, toting a gasoline range extender that aims to minimize charging downtime on the job. It’s also unveiled the N-Gen, a last-mile electric delivery van that packs an optional delivery drone. At the same time, GM said it was investing approximately $700 million in its other Ohio manufacturing facilities, which the automaker said should create about 450 new manufacturing jobs. The DMAX facility in Moraine will start building more diesel engines for next-gen heavy-duty pickups, the Toledo Transmission plant will boost production of GM’s 10-speed automatic transmission and its Parma Metal Center will increase stamped-part production. The automaker noted that hourly employees at unallocated plants (like Lordstown) can request a transfer to one of these new jobs, and that more than 1,350 employees have already taken transfers to other plants with union representation. Researchers design sixstate magnetic memory

first_imgThe main advantage of having six states is that it would increase the memory density while avoiding the problems inherent in miniaturization. Currently the primary strategy for increasing memory density is to miniaturize each memory element so that more of them can fit on a chip. However, at these small scales, the memory elements are so close together that they begin to interfere with each other’s states. The new design can avoid this problem, and also offers other advantages.”Going from two to six states would triple the density under certain conditions (for example, maintaining the lateral scale of the bit),” Klein said. “In addition, other advantages are also expected. The cost of the memory would probably decrease significantly, and when such bits are incorporated in a magnetic memory array, we may witness other benefits such as increased reading speeds.”The researchers expect that it may be possible to design patterns with even more magnetic states. For example, their simulations show that a pattern of four crossing ellipses would yield a memory element with eight magnetic memory states. “We intend to further increase the number of magnetic states and explore the limits of such an extrapolation,” Klein said. “In addition, we would like to progress towards fabricating a prototype that will help us convince the magnetic memory industry to make a shift towards multi-level magnetic memory.” Realizing the six-state magnetic element does not require any significant increase in complexity, such as adding layers, but rather involves simply structuring one of the magnetic layers differently—specifically, arranging the magnetic film into a pattern of three crossing ellipses. In the middle region where all three ellipses overlap, the researchers found that there are six different stable magnetic orientations. The orientations are parallel to the long axis of each ellipse, and can run in two opposite directions. If such a pattern with six magnetic orientations can be controlled and incorporated in a magnetic memory element, then the number of memory states can be increased from two to six. The researchers showed that such control is possible by using a technique called spin-orbit torque switching, which uses spin-polarized electric current to switch between magnetic states. This demonstration shows that the spin-orbit torques can write data onto the magnetic structure, showing the potential for using the structure as a memory element. The researchers, Yevgeniy Telepinsky et al., from Bar-Ilan University in Israel and New York University in the US, have published a paper on the new magnetic structure in a recent issue of Applied Physics Letters. This isn’t the first time that researchers have designed memory cells with more than two states, or bits. The best-known example is multi-level flash memory cells, which can store up to four bits per cell. While multi-level flash cells have advantages such as a higher density and lower cost, they also suffer intrinsic drawbacks such as lower writing speeds and higher power consumption. The new six-state memory element presented here is different because it is magnetic, whereas flash memory is electronic. Although electronic memories are currently the most commonly used type of memory, various types of magnetic random access memory (MRAM) are being actively researched due to advantages in low power consumption, fast operation, and long lifetime.”Our proposal paves the way for enjoying the benefits of multi-level cells in MRAM, making it even more attractive for applications,” Lior Klein, a physics professor at Bar-Ilan University and one of the study’s lead authors, told Phys.org. “Furthermore, since MRAM is different in its nature from flash, there is no reason that it should suffer from the drawbacks of multi-level-cell flash memory.” By arranging magnetic film into a pattern of three crossing ellipses, researchers demonstrated six magnetic configurations are possible in the overlapping region. But there is no fundamental reason why there should be just two. In a new study, researchers have designed a magnetic element that has six stable magnetic states, which paves the way toward realizing a six-state magnetic memory element.
