iBummer: Augmented Reality Fans Disappointed By iPad

first_imgBeen living under a rock these days? There’s this hip new tablet device from Apple called the iPad. Most are in agreement that the new toy is pretty slick, but they also agree on where the iPad fails – there’s no camera. iPod Touch fans were disappointed last year when Apple announced that the iPod Nano would be getting the much coveted camera, and now fans of a different sort are feeling the same dejected feelings.Augmented reality is a technology that allows 2D and 3D objects to be placed onto a live video feed, creating unique user experiences. AR applications entered the mainstream with a few advertisements and installations for automobiles in 2008. Since then the technology has found its way onto our home computers with things like the GE Smart Grid campaign, and onto our cell phones with mobile AR browsers like Layar and Wikitude. Have you seen those videos of people holding their iPhones up in London or New York to find the nearest subway station? That’s augmented reality, and developers and followers of the technology (myself included) were hoping a camera on the iPad would open the door to a larger and more immersive AR experience. No such luck. 5 Outdoor Activities for Beating Office Burnout Tags:#Augmented Reality#web In the grand scheme of things, augmented reality represents a drop in the ocean of iPhone app development, and Apple would need more than some petitions and disappointed developers to add a camera or change their API. However, hope may be on the horizon, as MacRumors.com reported this morning on the discovery of the option to take photos in the iPad simulator. While disappointed, AR fans are still optimistic about the iPad’s future. Claire Boonstra and Maarten Lens-FitzGerald, co-founders of Layar, one of the most popular mobile AR applications to date, expressed their sentiments on Twitter Wednesday when they heard the news about the iPad. Boonstra noted that we may have to wait for version 2.0 to see Layar on the iPad, while Lens-FitzGerald added that they have plenty of mobile phones to work on for the time being. Related Posts chris cameron 9 Books That Make Perfect Gifts for Industry Ex… Thomas Carpenter at Games Alfresco, the leading augmented reality news blog, may have said it best when he noted Wednesday that Steve Jobs didn’t make the iPad for AR fans – he made it to give Amazon’s Jeff Bezos nightmares. Either way, for those of us eager to have our realities augmented, perhaps we will be pleasantly surprised next year when AR developers like Boonstra and Lens-FitzGerald are the ones on stage with Jobs showing off the next iteration of the iPad. The best thing AR fans can do for now is create and promote amazing AR applications that will captivate the masses and launch AR further into the public eye. We can only hope that Steve Jobs is watching.Be sure to keep your eye out in the next few weeks, as ReadWriteWeb will be presenting our next premium report focusing this time on the use of augmented reality in marketing. Mark Billinghurst, one of AR’s “founding fathers” and a leading AR researcher since 1994, reached out to me yesterday to express his feelings about the iPad – a device with which he says Apple has missed an opportunity.“The form factor, CPU and graphics capability make it an ideal platform for a handheld AR experience,” said Billinghurst. “A camera on the back of the iPad would have enabled the development of vision based AR applications and created a whole new class of ARapplications on the App store.”Billinghurst also points out that his company ARToolworks has already provided over 100 iPhone app developers with their ARToolKit SDK, a clear sign of the growing interest in mobile AR. However, one hurdle in the way of these developers is Apple’s reluctance to open the video API on the iPhone to real-time image processing – an impedance which AR proponents have gone as far to petition Apple to overturn.Right now, applications can grab a few frames every couple of seconds to process, but the kind of accuracy needed for AR applications requires real-time frame-by-frame processing of the video feed. This would allow applications to track objects and motion seen through the camera’s lens, greatly increasing the chances for accurate placement of 2D and 3D objects as well as the interpretation of real-world items.last_img read more

Look Out Farmville: Angry Birds is Coming to Facebook

first_img9 Books That Make Perfect Gifts for Industry Ex… 12 Unique Gifts for the Hard-to-Shop-for People… For you 30-something geeks out there, Angry Birds may feel like a simple, dumbed down version of DOS-based video game classic Scorched Earth. For the rest of you, it’s simply one of the the most popular games on the planet. If an Angry Birds movie and versions for nearly every smartphone on the market isn’t enough, it looks like it has the world’s largest social network in its sights. You guessed it, Angry Birds is coming to Facebook. The game – in which you fling a variety of birds at things in hopes of knocking them over – is a complete blockbuster with more than 75 million downloads. Several different gaming blogs have reported that Angry Birds’ creator, Rovio, has told Wired UK that it is working on a social reinvention of the game for Facebook. While Facebook Director of Gaming Partnerships Sean Ryancommented last January at the Inside Social Apps conference that Angry Birds “wouldn’t make a lot of sense” on Facebook, it appears that the company has taken heed by working on a specially socialized version of the game.“If you have a single player game, it’s not clear why you should build it for us, you should probably build it for other people,” said Ryan.Rovio studio boss Mikael Hed told Wired that the Facebook version of Angry Birds would have “completely new aspects to it that just haven’t been experienced in any other platform.”Will Angry Birds take over as the number one game on Facebook? Can it compete with the crack-like qualities of games like Farmville and Cityville? JISCO Alpart Targeting Minimum One Shipment of Alumina Export Per Month

first_img “I think we are lucky to have had the first shipment by the end of last year, and the end of February was (when we had) the second shipment of alumina. So far, the operation has already gone to a higher level, so we will have enough eventually to arrange at least one shipment per month,” he indicated. Story Highlights Chinese entity, Jiuquan Iron and Steel Company (JISCO), which owns and operates the Alpart refinery in St. Elizabeth, is aiming to upgrade the plant and increase its capacity to facilitate the exportation of a minimum one shipment of alumina per month. Chinese entity, Jiuquan Iron and Steel Company (JISCO), which owns and operates the Alpart refinery in St. Elizabeth, is aiming to upgrade the plant and increase its capacity to facilitate at least one shipment of alumina per month.Assistant Managing Director of JISCO Alpart Jamaica, Sun Jing, disclosed that the company has already spent US$150 million to overhaul the plant in order to commence production that will lead to them attaining the target this year. According to Mr. Sun, the company has already been able to export two shipments of alumina in just over six months.“I think we are lucky to have had the first shipment by the end of last year, and the end of February was (when we had) the second shipment of alumina. So far, the operation has already gone to a higher level, so we will have enough eventually to arrange at least one shipment per month,” he indicated. The JISCO executive noted, however, that the outdated facilities present some challenges with respect to getting the plant fully operational. “We have to engage more persons to help us to run this plant. So although it probably needs 600-700 persons to operate, we have employed almost 900 Jamaicans for maintenance, operations and other relevant activities,” he said.Mr. Sun emphasised that modification and upgrade of the plant are imperative in order to maintain the operation. “Until then, we just keep going… although some of the (input) costs are very high, like oil and caustic soda. So to survive for the long-term, we need to do the expansion as quickly as possible.” Mr. Sun noted, however, that full modification and upgrading will take time.“When you finish the design, then you will have to begin the procurement process to buy equipment and do the installation. For the new equipment to be commissioned takes about one year.” he explained.Mr. Sun assured, however, that JISCO is committed to keeping the facility’s operations going until the modification and upgrading project is completed, “then we will have a chance to finish the new learning curve to bring this Alpart plant to the two million-tonne capacity per year”.A framework agreement has been signed between the Government of Jamaica and JISCO to undertake major improvement works at the plant and at Port Kaiser. This includes expansion of the existing refinery and construction of a new alumina plant; construction of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) power plant; and the creation of a Special Economic Zone.Sale of the Alpart plant to JISCO and its subsequent reopening have been credited for significantly contributing to a 15 per cent growth in Jamaica’s mining sector over the October to December quarter of 2017. Assistant Managing Director of JISCO Alpart Jamaica, Sun Jing, disclosed that the company has already spent US$150 million to overhaul the plant in order to commence production that will lead to them attaining the target this year.
